CRIME NEWS

  • A Pierce County man, Ron Albert Tuaau, 33, was charged with armed robbery after he allegedly pointed a gun at a USPS mail carrier in Spanaway around 11:45 a.m. Monday—he stole a master key and fled from police before being apprehended following a short car chase.  KOMO News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hilltop community members and visitors will soon see markers and plaques placed along Martin Luther King Jr. Way between 6th Avenue and South 19th Street as part of a new public art project honoring local leaders and important events. The project is led by local artist Whitney Brady and will begin with nine granite markers and develop in phases—using input from local historians and community groups—to celebrate Hilltop's history.  City of Tacoma

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Anti-hazing advocates raised concerns that only 11 of more than 30 colleges have shared hazing incident data as required by Sam's Law—a rule set after Sam Martinez's death. Houtz testified before lawmakers in Olympia yesterday and said upcoming federal measures will soon require all institutions to post similar data.  KOMO News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Food banks in Washington braced for federal budget cuts announced on April 2—warning that key programs for tribes, small producers, schools and low-income families may be at risk.  FOX 13
  • Food Lifeline, a nonprofit that supports food banks across Washington, expects to lose $2 million in funding as federal cuts push the state to lose nearly $50 million in benefits, putting local food programs under added strain. Ryan Scott, the organization’s Chief Development Officer, said they will seek help from donors, volunteers, and legislators to cover the shortfall—underscoring the tough funding landscape for food banks.  KOMO News
  • After weather delayed sessions in March, Tacoma Streets Initiative II info sessions will take place on April 12 at the South Tacoma and Swasey Library branches to explain plans to improve roads, sidewalks, and paths in Tacoma—voters will see Proposition 1 on the ballot on April 22 to support tax changes for these upgrades.  City of Tacoma
  • Street closures for the Residential Street Restoration Program will start on April 7 and finish on May 30—South 92nd Street will be closed from April 7 to 11 while South 76th Street will be closed from April 14 to May 30. The work is weather-dependent so schedules may change—community members with questions can call Jeff Maki.  City of Tacoma
