About this event

This class cultivates the spirit of Kolkata yoga teaching in India and the practices according to the instructions of Dr. Gouri Shankar Mukerji. Postures are practiced in several sets with a rest in between. Join us in this weekly class and practice 5 postures, 5 sets, and watch what the mind and body during the process. According to Dr. Mukerji and explained by Ida Jo & Scott Lamps of Ghosh Yoga on Patreon: "Practicing this way has profound implications for the body and mind. In the body, it requires stamina and moderation. It is difficult to hold the postures for a whole minute. The muscles get tired and balance gets challenging. We are forced to moderate our effort and depth so we can hold the postures the whole time. This is a different approach from pushing hard for just a few seconds. In the mind, it demands concentration, perseverance and patience. The long holds and slow pace of the class can seem boring at first, but it opens into a settled, unhurried, focused practice that reminds us that there is nowhere else to be. When holding the postures for a minute, the mind tends to wander, either due to fatigue or simply because enough time has gone by. Keeping the mind focused on the task at hand, keeping it in the body and breath is the real benefit of this practice."
