About this event

The Flying Feminist

Bring the family and listen to this true story of Lilian Bland. She wore trousers, enjoyed fishing and worked as a sports journalist. Inspired by the flight of the wild birds she loved to photograph, in 1910 she defied convention and became the first woman to design, build and fly her own airplane, earning her an accolade: The Flying Feminist! Perfect for budding feminists and adventurers, this narrative non-fiction picture book will inspire children to pursue their passions and achieve great things. Soar on!

About the Author

Mary Boone grew up in rural Iowa. Prior to becoming an author, she reported and edited for several daily newspapers. Mary has written over 70 non-fiction books for young readers, including Pedal Pusher, School for Fish and Bugs for Breakfast. Mary now lives in Tacoma, Washington, with her husband, Mitch and her very stubborn Airedale Terrier, Ruthie Bader.
