Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 11th of September.
Good morning, Tacoma.
On Tuesday, Tacoma City Council approved a Lateral Incentive Program for the Tacoma Police Department to ease staffing shortages by offering lateral officers a $50,000 bonus over two years and extra leave benefits.
The program will recruit experienced officers from within the state—aiming to cut overtime use and speed up deployment for improved service.
On September 9, Tacoma City Council adopted updated rules for the South Tacoma Groundwater Protection District Code to better protect the aquifer that supplies half of Tacoma's water in the summer — the changes come after years of studies and public input that banned high-impact land uses and updated mapping. These revisions will help enforce stricter controls on activities that risk contaminating the groundwater.
Tacoma City Council unanimously adopted Resolution 41757 on September 09, allocating $20,000 from the Council Contingency Fund to Advocates for Immigrants in Detention Northwest to support phone fund and welcome center services for detainees at NWIPC.
Council members Olgy Diaz, Kristina Walker, Sandesh Sadalge and Joe Bushnell said the funding will help vulnerable individuals connect with legal aid and family—providing needed support—while the city continues to advocate for broad immigration reform.
In a recent episode of On the Sidelines, analysts Ethan and D-Jack discussed how the Seahawks lost to the 49ers and questioned coach Mike Macdonald's field goal choice with three minutes left — the show also previewed week two games featuring the Steelers and DK Metcalf facing his former team.
