CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Pierce County prosecutors asked Judge Schwartz to review Shawn Kemp’s sentence of 30 days home detention and 240 hours community service for a 2023 Tacoma Mall shooting—saying the punishment is too light for a violent offense—and a hearing is set for Sept. 9. FOX 13
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students returned to classrooms in Tacoma as large school districts, including Tacoma Public Schools, resumed in-person learning yesterday. School officials said that teachers and staff are ready to support a new academic year with updated safety measures. FOX 13
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Tacoma’s Public Works Department secured two grants to improve local traffic safety—one for Stewart Middle School Safe Routes to School receiving $2.04 million plus a $443,000 match, and another for the South Tacoma Way Vision Zero project funded at $1.5 million. The first project will begin construction in 2028 while early design work for the South Tacoma Way improvements is set to start in early 2026. City of Tacoma
