ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A suspected drunk driver crashed into an active construction zone on SR-16 near Tacoma Narrows Bridge on August 14th — authorities said the driver hit equipment with a small amount of radioactive material that did not spill, leading to the closure of eastbound lanes.  FOX 13

CRIME NEWS

  • A Tacoma woman who survived a stabbing at Point Defiance Park said she feels strong and relieved after hearing her attacker—Nicholas Matthew—found guilty, adding that she kept every flower and card as a reminder of community care while his sentencing is set for the end of September.  KOMO News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Tacoma Arts Commission selected Mari Griffin as Tacoma’s new Poet Laureate for 2025–2027 and she will host poetry readings and workshops to boost the local literary scene. An award event is scheduled for Sunday, August 17 at 1:00 p.m.—where outgoing Poet Laureate Christian Paige will also perform.  City of Tacoma

SPORTS NEWS

  • Two high school football players from Mount Tahoma and Lincoln High Schools signed NIL deals with Secret Burger Kitchen, a Tacoma burger restaurant—Durr, a senior committed to the University of Washington, and Kaho, a junior with offers from eight schools, mark the first such deals for athletes in the city.  KOMO News
