COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, Aug. 5, Pierce County Animal Control and deputies executed a warrant to rescue 80 cats and kittens from a cramped mobile home trailer in Graham—neighbors reported the trailer was overcrowded with many of the animals sick, flea infested, or nursing litters. The rescued cats will receive veterinary examinations before being transferred to Tacoma Humane Society for adoption. KOMO News

- ➤ A shooting at Allenmore Hospital left a man dead and a woman injured Wednesday evening, and Tacoma Police confirmed no suspect is in custody + that the investigation is ongoing. KOMO News
- ➤ The trial of Nicholas Matthew, accused of stabbing a woman in Point Defiance Park in February and facing an attempted murder charge, continued as police officers and a forensic scientist testified about DNA evidence linking him to the attack while prosecutors noted that the victim survived a four-day hospital stay. - ➤ Glass Fest Northwest will return to Tacoma on Aug. 9 with live art demonstrations at the Museum of Glass—Studio 13 Live previewed the featured artists for the event. FOX 13

- ➤ Wildlife officials warned crabbers to check their catch during crabbing season because invasive European green crabs have entered Puget Sound — they are hard to tell apart when they appear orange. FOX 13

- ➤ ICE Tea Tools—a new digital tool—has launched to track ICE agent presence by using a dispatcher system that verifies anonymous reports and creates a heatmap of sightings. The self-funded tool, developed in western Washington, has already received local reports from Tacoma and will help communities prepare for immigration enforcement activity. FOX 13
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A Pierce County woman—diagnosed on August 2nd with malaria and with no recent travel—is under investigation by local and state health officials to see if she was infected by a mosquito bite, which would be the first locally acquired case in Washington; officials say the risk remains very low. - ➤ Health officials in Pierce County are investigating if a woman diagnosed with malaria on August 6 was infected in Washington state—officials are reviewing her travel and exposure details. The investigation continues as they work to determine whether the case indicates local transmission. FOX 13
- ➤ Health officials in East Pierce County are investigating a potential first locally acquired malaria case after a woman with no travel history was diagnosed on August 2—her treatment is ongoing. Tacoma-Pierce County, the state, and the CDC are testing mosquitoes—officials say the risk remains very low. KOMO News
