COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City Council Member Joe Bushnell expressed disappointment over the closure of Tacoma’s Pacific Fred Meyer store as part of Kroger’s move for efficiency, noting the store served as a vital hub for groceries, prescriptions, and jobs. The Community & Economic Development Department is working with property owners to attract new tenants — a step aimed at re-energizing this prime commercial space.  City of Tacoma

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Troopers reported a serious injury crash blocked all lanes on SR 410 between Sumner and Bonney Lake on Friday morning when a truck lost control on Ehli Hill, hit a concrete barrier and collided with a motorcycle, with the truck driver arrested for DUI vehicular assault and crews set to clear the road at 6:22 a.m.  KOMO News

  • Actor Bill Bellamy appeared on Good Day Seattle to promote his upcoming comedy tour stop in Tacoma—he will perform for local audiences soon.  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sound Transit is studying new rules to allow everyday dogs on buses + trains if they remain on a leash or in a carrier under their owner's control. The agency will decide if a rule change is best after comparing practices from other transit systems.  KOMO News
  • The City of Tacoma’s Equity in Contracting Program will host a virtual workshop and Q&A session on August 6 from 9 to 10 a.m. to help minority, women, and disadvantaged business owners understand the OMWBE certification process—participants will learn about required documentation, application tips, and the follow-up hybrid workshop on August 18 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.  City of Tacoma
  • Tacoma Public Works will begin maintenance on the I-705 Stadium Spur ramps on August 11 to install a new concrete overlay and repair expansion joints connecting I-705 to Commerce Street and South Stadium Way. Northbound off-ramps will close until September 14 and southbound ramps until October 19 — each ramp closing for about 35 consecutive days with detours provided during weather-dependent work.  City of Tacoma
  • WSDOT is seeking legal costs after a whistleblower lawsuit was dropped— the case was filed last year when a former employee reported concerns about the state’s cap and trade program.  FOX 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Measles cases in the U.S. have soared nearly five times higher than last year, with 39 states including Washington breaking a 1992 record—leading to a drop in kindergarten vaccinations and raising concern among health officials.  FOX 13
