- ➤ The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County said 32 dogs were rescued from an overcrowded home after officers responded to a barking complaint, and the shelter is asking for foster homes as it faces high demand before the 4th of July fireworks — many existing foster spots are already filled. - ➤ Beloved Tacoma elementary school crossing guard Miss Peggy ended her nearly 25-year career on June 26 when budget cuts forced her to hang up her stop sign—True Northwest photojournalist Michael Driver captured her farewell on her last day, marking the end of a cherished local service. FOX 13

- ➤ The Seafair Pirates commandeered Studio 13 Live yesterday to announce they will host summer events around Puget Sound—promising a season of new local activities. FOX 13
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A pod of orcas was seen playing near the shore of Commencement Bay by local observer Colleen Garland—experts believe the whales likely did not include the endangered Southern Residents, noting they have not been confirmed inland for eight weeks. - ➤ South 21st Street between Jefferson and Pacific avenues will reopen on the evening of July 3 after the completion of Prairie Line Trail Phase II enhancements that improve Tacoma's active transportation network from the waterfront to downtown. Enhancements along Hood Street between South 21st and South 25th streets are expected to finish by mid-July — connecting the completed trail at the UW Tacoma campus to the Water Ditch Trail.
