CRIME NEWS

  • Three 18-year-olds were arrested and pleaded not guilty to murder and assault charges after a shooting left a teen dead in Tacoma.  FOX 13
  • Shawn Kemp is heading to court for pretrial hearings two years after a gunfire exchange occurred in the Tacoma Mall parking lot. His lawyers claim bias in the case — the hearings are expected to set the stage for further legal actions.  FOX 13
  • Seattle SuperSonics legend Shawn Kemp appeared before a judge at a pretrial hearing over the Tacoma Mall parking lot shooting, where he pleaded not guilty after claiming self-defense when he returned fire following a truck break-in—his attorneys secured permission for jurors to hear the assailants’ criminal records while a ruling on drive-by shooting evidence will be made next Tuesday.  KOMO News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hundreds gathered at Tacoma Public Schools' Central Administration Building on May 22 to protest a $30 million budget shortfall and the non-renewal of 105 provisional employees. Protesters said the district is cutting low-paid workers while protecting high-paid officials (some called it a class war) and urged that budget cuts target top positions (as emphasized at the rally).  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is preparing for nearly one million passengers over Memorial Day weekend as the TSA plans to screen 970,000 travelers from Wednesday through Monday — with 182,000 expected on Friday and 163,000 on Memorial Day.  KOMO News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The USDA issued a public health alert for mislabeled chicken soup cups sold in Texas, Utah, and Washington that did not list wheat as an allergen—consumers with the product are advised to discard it even though it is no longer in stores. The cups were produced on April 10.  FOX 13
