ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A major semi rollover crash and fire closed both directions of I—5 in Tacoma Tuesday morning near S 84th St as the semi hit a barrier and a light pole while crews battled the flames and diverted traffic to off-ramps.  KOMO News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Viral TikTok videos and Facebook posts falsely claim that Seattle ports are dead, but port officials reported that the Port of Seattle saw a 7% increase in cargo last month and a nearly 20% rise in volume during the first four months of this year—adding that new U.S. tariffs may lead to job losses and higher costs. Officials urge calm as shipping data and scheduled international arrivals show the ports remain active.  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pierce County Council approved on Tuesday a policy that bans county resources from being used to support most federal surveillance or registration programs—except when a judge orders assistance—while ensuring county officials will still enforce criminal law and address public safety threats.  KOMO News
  • On April 29, the City Council nominated Hyun Kim as Interim City Manager on a term that will start June 30 and end when a permanent manager is named or he is removed by the Council. The Council also authorized the Director of Human Resources to negotiate his contract & final approval will come from the Council.  City of Tacoma
  • Tacoma City Council is seeking applicants for five Board of Building Appeals positions and requires candidates to have experience in various building codes—applicants must submit materials to the City Clerk’s Office by May 18 and, if chosen, complete required trainings within 90 days.  City of Tacoma
  • An Irish woman with a green card was detained at the ICE facility in Tacoma on April 29th — she remains in custody.  FOX 13
