COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tacoma is teaming with Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, Northwest Center and the Northwest Furniture Bank to host a free drop-off series that will run from May through September to keep reusable items out of landfills. Community members can bring clothing, toys, housewares, small appliances and furniture every second and fourth Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM at Tacoma Recovery & Transfer Center on S. Mullen Street (items such as mattresses, large appliances and hazardous waste will not be accepted) on a first-come, first-served basis until trucks are full.  City of Tacoma

CRIME NEWS

  • Pierce County deputies arrested a 29-year-old man after he falsely reported a 27-year-old woman's death as a suicide on Fox Island near Tacoma, and investigators found that her injuries did not match a self-harm explanation—prompting a homicide investigation.  FOX 13
  • An 18-year-old suspect was arrested in Des Moines on April 17 for his alleged role in a March 29 house party shooting in Spanaway that killed two and injured four — he has been charged with first-degree assault and is held on $100,000 bail.  KOMO News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Bob Ferguson signed a new law on April 8 that stops out-of-state National Guard troops from entering Washington without his permission unless directed by the president. The law—sponsored by Rep. Sharlett Mena from Tacoma—took effect immediately under an emergency clause and does not limit disaster response efforts.  KOMO News

  • On May 21 no earlier than 6 p.m., the Tacoma Planning Commission will hold a hybrid public hearing on proposed amendments to the South Tacoma Groundwater Protection District code and Municipal Code Title 13 with in-person attendance at the Municipal Building Council Chambers (747 Market St.) and online options. An informational meeting on the updates is scheduled for May 15 at STAR Center (3873 S. 66th St.) and written comments can be submitted by 5 p.m. on May 23.  City of Tacoma
