CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Tacoma police said a man was wanted for felony harassment after he approached a trooper's home on April 7 and threatened a surveillance camera while pointing what looked like a gun at it with a marked state patrol vehicle in the driveway, and anyone recognizing him is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers for a reward of up to $1,000. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Field biologist Mark Malleson observed a newborn orca calf swimming alongside J40—also known as Suttles—when the pod passed Victoria Harbour on April 6; researchers confirmed the calf, designated J63, is the first offspring of J40 and the fourth calf born to the endangered Southern Resident killer whales in the past year. The Center for Whale Research will monitor its condition in the coming weeks. FOX 13
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The state legislature passed a bill that limits out-of-state national guard troops from performing military duties without the governor’s permission—except when they are ordered into active service by the president. The bill now goes to Governor Ferguson, who plans to sign it. FOX 13
- ➤ On Thursday, a Pierce County family filed a $165 million claim against Washington state saying state social workers failed to protect a vulnerable child who was badly burned in a shed fire on May 25th—a claim that argues the agency ignored serious warning signs in the child's care. KOMO News
- ➤ Washington state passed a bill that stops circuses from using elephants, bears, wild cats and nonhuman primates — the law, known as SB 5065, was sponsored by Sen. Marko Liias with bipartisan support. The bill will be sent to Governor Bob Ferguson for his signature soon — making Washington the 12th state to impose such limits. KOMO News
