BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ A Tacoma coffee shop owner said he is traveling to Puerto Rico—seeking new sources for coffee beans after tariffs on Latin American imports are set to drive up costs. Coffee roasters in Puget Sound will look for more affordable supplies and may pass higher prices on to customers. FOX 13
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ State and federal spending on K-12 schools went up a lot over the past decade but 4th grade reading and 8th grade math scores dropped—Edunomics Lab at Georgetown University showed data from the 2024 national test. State officials plan to ask lawmakers for more funding and extra math time in elementary school to help students do better. KOMO News
- ➤ A new federal rule forces Washington schools to sign a contract saying they have ended DEI practices or risk losing federal funds. State Superintendent Chris Reykdal said his office is reviewing the rule's legality as cuts could reduce Title I funding—support for high poverty students, meals for kids and services for students with disabilities. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Tacoma Fire Department swore in its new fire chief yesterday—she is the first Samoan to lead the department—and she is already breaking new ground in her role. FOX 13
- ➤ Lawmakers in Washington and Oregon are weighing proposals to give unemployment benefits to striking workers—after Boeing factory workers, nurses and teachers staged walkouts. Washington would give private workers up to 12 weeks of benefits after a two-week wait—while Oregon would extend benefits to picketing public employees. FOX 13
- ➤ Drivers on I-5 near JBLM and Steilacoom-DuPont Road experienced an overnight closure on April 4 and will face another closure tonight and again next weekend because of a major construction project—crews will install new overpass girders for a new interchange while law enforcement directs detours and maintains emergency access. FOX 13
